Josh has been a high school teacher since 2001, beginning his career in New Brunswick, before making a westbound journey to B.C. with a 1-year layover teaching in Ontario. Since 2004, Josh has been teaching in Burnaby in various roles and subject areas (e.g., learning support, social studies, and physical and health education), while serving as a PHE department head since 2012. In addition to these teaching roles, Josh has worked with the BC Ministry of Education to write and lead the development of the new K-12 PHE curriculum; serves as the president of Physical and Health Education in BC (PHE BC), a provincial specialist association under the BCTF; and represents BC at the national level on the PHE Canada Council of Provinces and Territories.

Josh began his exploration into the world of assessment to grow as a teacher and to better understand how to support students in their learning. When he first came across standards-based learning, and the many approaches related to it, he felt a sense of rejuvenation in his career and began to reimagine what teaching and learning could look in his classes and school. The many unanswered questions Josh had about teaching, his effectiveness as a teacher, and ways to connect with and support students, started to erode and clarity and purpose took their place. There is no question that assessment has completely transformed Josh as a teacher, and more importantly, the learning experiences of students in class.

Along with teaching, Josh delivers presentations, workshops, and supports teachers, departments, and schools throughout BC, and across Canada in areas related to assessment, grading, communicating student learning, and more. Aside from these experiences, Josh is most passionate and excited for the adventures in being a father to Kayden, Alia, fur baby Lola, and a husband to Tanya
